WJ-8922 TSCM briefcase surveillance receiver - top view
This is what you see when you open the briefcase. The main receiver is across the top. The main receiver controller is on the right. They communicate via serial control. The sub-carrier/HF receiver is in the middle. The blue box on the left is a Tektronix oscilloscope which is the the spectrum display unit.
Not much is known about this unit. WJ released a block diagram and some rudimentary
user information on request but refused to release anything else at the direction
of the original customer (who is unknown). It contains a digitally synthesized
DC to 3 GHz receiver with bandwidths of 10, 75, & 300 kHz and 1 & 3 MHz. It also contains a separately controllable HF receiver (center black module) for demodulating subcarriers. The unit will demodulate AM, FM, CW, Pulse, USB & LSB. A miniature Tektronix oscilloscope provides spectrum displays. Also has scanning and computer remote control functions. A very unusual radio. Completely powered by 12 VDC.
A reader found a data sheet for a WJ-8922 built in a different manner. WJ often produced technical data sheets for prototypes or conjectural designs, some of which were completely redesigned before sale or, in some cases, were never sold.
