Various units advertised as WJ-8691A systems have popped up on eBay in incomplete or gutted condition but I was lucky enough to get pictures of a complete system.
They appear to be programmed for some sort of cell phone intercept but the rumor mill has it that they can be programmed to receive multiple channels of anything between DC and 2 GHz with proper software and modules.
This unit has two 2GHz frequency extenders. An integral DAT drive might be for unattended logging of spectrum activity. Rumor also has it that the federal government forced auctions of these radios off eBay. These units will probably never be declassified. |

WJ-8691A - The whole package
The full open view. The receiver is in the lower left section. The power supplies, battery and DAT tape drive are in the upper left & middle section. The two frequency extenders are in the upper section one above another on the right. To my knowledge, no private citizen has managed to get one of these units properly operating. Even though this unit was physically complete, it did not have any software or tape cartridges. The programming in the software is typically a higher security concern than the hardware. The software would reveal the nature of the surveillance mission.
