The R-1449/WLR-6(V) was part of the larger WLR-6 system created by systems intergrator Sylvania Electronics. The radio was subcontracted to Communication Electronics, Inc and built in their Rockville, MD plant. The design of this radio probably provided the expertise and circuits that led to the development of the very successful 357 receiver.

Many hobbyists assumed this radio was made by Sylvania because of the nomenclature tag. Sylvania was the contract for the WLR-6 system and subcontracted out some of the work for various components to other companies.

R-1449-closeup In the foreground is the filmstrip dial and gear assembly that was used in several of the subsequent VLF receivers in this product line, the 351, 354 & 354. These filmstrip dial receivers are rare compared to the 357 which used Nixie frequency display.

The R-1449/WLR-6(V) was internally designated as the CEI 350A. It was packaged for intergration into a Sylvania system on waterborne military craft. I have heard it was primarily a submarine radio. A close look at the pictures below reveals the distinctive gold modules that are a hallmark of CEI/WJ engineering.

The pictures and information on the R-1449/WLR-6 were provided by John Kolb. More information on this radio can be found on his website. If you have more information or would like to talk to John about the R-1149/WLR-6 he can be reached at jlkolb@jlkolb.cts.com.

Looking inside quickly reveals the gold CEI modules lifted from the 350 series of receivers. The CEI logos are printed right on the boxes. For comparison look at the 357 modules.

The local oscillator module is almost identical to the one in the 357 local oscillator pictured above.

This picture shows the left side with the IF filter module removed. This module is different from the 357 filter module. If you look closely at the bottom of the 357 filter module (center of linked picture), you'll notice it was made in two sections which accommodates the adaptation for this application. The filters are identical and the module was manufactured by CEI.
